‘What is this thing called Discipline?’ is a presentation about the Melbourne, Australia-based contemporary art journal, Discipline. It will discuss the journal’s editorial project, its physical structure, as well as its art historical background and ambitions—focusing particularly on the theorisation of contemporary art as a specific entity, rather than reverting to the term ‘pluralism’ as a descriptor and interpretative framework for talking about the multeity of contemporary art practices around the world today. This presentation will also plot out the landscape of contemporary Australian art criticism, and explain why Australia needs this thing called Discipline.

Helen Hughes is a PhD candidate in Art History at the University of Melbourne. She is co-founder and co-editor of the Melbourne-based contemporary art journal Discipline, and an editor of emaj—Electronic Melbourne Art Journal. She teaches Art History at the University of Melbourne, and Critical and Theoretical Studies at the Victorian College of the Arts. Since 2009, she has been a chairperson with David Homewood and Nicholas Croggon of the postgraduate Modern and Contemporary Art Reading Group at the University of Melbourne.
