KUNCI Cultural Studies Center mengundang anda hadir dalam presentasi residensi Iwan Effendi dan Ria Papermoon (Papermoon Puppet Theater) di program AIR-Koganecho 2012, Yokohama, Jepang.

Koganecho hari ini adalah bangunan-bangunan mungil berlantai dua berjajar rapat di bawah rel kereta di satu sudut kota Yokohama. Jalan-jalan kecil yang lengang. Sesekali burung- burung gagak dengan suara lantang terbang rendah kemudian hinggap di kabel listrik. Angin yang menusuk di musim dingin kali ini, menambah kesunyiannya. Kawasan itu tidak pernah sesepi itu sebelum tahun 2005, apalagi di malam hari. Lokasi ini sangat erat dengan stempel prostitusi, narkoba, kekerasan dan yakuza selama puluhan tahun. Bangunan mungil yang dulunya adalah hostel itu tak pernah sepi pengunjung. Bisnis berjalan secara ilegal di di tengah kerlip lampu neon box berwarna merah muda.

Di balik gemerlap-gelap sejarah dan pemandangan sayu musim dingin Koganecho hari ini, hadir semacam semangat baru yang menggelegak di setiap kesibukan hening warga dan tetangga di tiap sudut lingkungan ini. Neon box striptease bar berganti dengan plang studio seniman kayu, musik erotik berubah menjadi live band setiap akhir pekan, rayuan wanita penghibur berubah menjadi sapaan ramah orang-orang di tengah suara gergaji kayu, hostel-hostel itu berubah fungsi menjadi toko buku, creative shop, galeri, bahkan studio seniman, transaksi obat terlarang berubah menjadi transaksi pasar sayur organik setiap selasa pagi.

Koganecho sedang bermetamorfosa. Dan di sanalah Iwan dan Ria tinggal selama dua bulan, bekerja dan belajar dengan orang-orang yang percaya bahwa seni bisa mengubah sesuatu: bahwa Koganecho bisa terus menjadi Kota Emas dengan kilau yang lain, di bawah rel kereta.

The City of Gold Beneath the Railway:
A Presentation of Papermoon Puppet Theater Residency Program in Koganecho, Yokohama, Japan

KUNCI Cultural Studies Center invites you to a presentation of Iwan Effendi and Ria Papermoon (Papermoon Puppet Theater) for their participation of AIR-Koganecho 2012 program in Koganecho, Yokohama, Japan.

Koganecho today appears as an alley of two-storeys flat houses lining up under one of the most active railway that connects the city of Yokohama to other parts of the region. The district is gravitated around some quiet alleys with occasional view of ravens flying low with their loud noise then perching on the electricity wires. The winter wind blow restlessly, adding to the silence pervading the area. Back to 2005, there was a different life animating Koganecho, especially during night time. This location had been labeled as a center for prostitution, drugs and violence for a long time. The flat-houses had served thousands of clients, illicit businesses were conducted under the glimmering pink neon-box.

Beyond the ominous history of the area and its landscape of the somber winter, one cannot escape but to notice the the surge of energy bubbling under the subtle preoccupation of its current residence accross the neighborhood. The striptease-bar neon-boxes are transformed to signboards of carpentry studios, seductive music coming out of the bars turns into live band performances every weekends, soliciting tones of sirens evolves to friendly greetings of community members amidst the noise made by the sawmills; brothels become bookshops, creative shops, galleries, and artist studio; drugs transactions are gone, replaced by a festive traditional market which opens every Tuesday morning.

Koganecho is going through a metamorphosis. And there Iwan and Ria have stayed for two months earlier this year, working and learning together with people who believes that art can change things: that Koganecho will eventually be the City of Gold which shines another kind of luster, from beneath the railway.
